Addressing caregiver syndrome

Perhaps you are one of the 54 million family members providing care for a loved with a chronic illness or you know of someone who is. Caring for a loved on can be very rewarding but the fact is, it can also be very stressful.

An article appearing in The Arizona Republic September 3rd by Leslie Wright gives an excellent idea of the challenges facing caregivers and lists some very helpful tips in dealing with the stress of caring for someone with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. (http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/news/articles/2009/09/03/20090903caregivers0902.html)

The most important thing to remember is that you are not alone. Millions of others are experiencing the same issues you are dealing with. Listed below are some local and national resources to help you, or someone you may know, cope with the issues of caring for a loved one with a chronic illness.

Alzheimer’s Association of Colorado – a great resource for support services through their regional offices.

Colorado Commission on Aging- established in 1964 to inform and advise decision makers and to advocate for the quality of life of all seniors.

Seniors, Inc. – If you live in Adams, Arapahoe or Denver County and you provide ongoing care you may apply for temporary relief help from Seniors Inc..

Caregivers.com - is a leading provider of information, support and guidance for family and professional caregivers.

Own Your Future Colorado! Request your LTC Planning Kit.

In July Governor Bill Ritter launched Colorado's "Own Your Future" campaign to encourage state residents to begin planning for their long-term care needs. If  you have not already requested your LTC Planning guide, I encourage you to do so.

According to some sources, 60% of us will need long term care sometime during our lives. It is important for all of us to prepare for that day when we will need to help loved ones with care or we will need long term care for ourselves.

We may prepare financially for unexpected disasters by covering our homes, automobiles and health with insurance policies. But no other life event can be as devastating to an elderly person's lifestyle, finances and security as needing long term care.

According to the John Hancock Cost of Care Survey, conducted by care Scout in 2008, the average cost for care in Denver for a semi-private room in a nursing home is $70,810.00 per year. Home health care rates average $19.69 an hour and rates in an assisted living facility are $32,604.00 per year.

The guide is filled with information to help you understand the risks on long-term care and to help you start forming a plan for your future.
